Cards & child cards
Learn about cards and how to break down work using child cards in Superthread
Creating a card
Create a new card by clicking the ‘Add card’ button in a board.
Quick card creation
Just press C
from anywhere in the app to bring up the card creation modal.
Create cards via email
Create cards by sending or forwarding an email to a unique email address associated with a board. Cards will be created in the first status/column of the board. The email subject line will become the card title and the email body will become the card description. Any files will be added as attachments.
The original sender will not be emailed back from Superthread when the card is updated or resolved.
To create a email address for a board, navigate to Settings > Spaces > Boards and enable the toggle for your chosen board.
You can see how a card was created in the Activity feed of the card. If the email sender is a member of your workspace, the creation of the card will attributed to that workspace member. If the sender is from an unrecognised email address, the card will show the sender’s email address as the creator.
Card properties
A card can have:
- Title – a short description, required for all cards.
- Description – a long form description with rich formatting and inline attachments.
- Status – the status (column) that the card should be created in.
- Assignee – can be a single user or multiple.
- Priority – none, low, medium, high, urgent
- Effort estimate – this field is only visible if you have chosen an effort estimation system for the space the card is in. You can do this from ‘Space settings’.
- Project – this is an optional field that indicates if this card is part of a larger project.
- Sprint – this is an optional field that shows which sprint the card has been added to. This is only relevant if you have turned on sprints for the space the card belongs to.
- Start date – can be set manually (for planning ahead), or if no value has been set, it will be set automatically when a card moves to an ‘In progress’ status.
- Due date – will notify the assignee when a card is ‘due soon’ or ‘overdue’.
- Tags – can be space level tags or workspace level tags. Learn more about tags.
In addition, cards have dedicated sections for:
- Attachments – upload any images, videos, or files to the card. Attachments can also be added inline in the card description or in card comments.
- Checklists – simple list of checklist items that can be crossed off with a counter for number of completed items.
- Child Cards – a list of all the cards that have been added as children. This section also will shows the number of child cards completed.
- Comments and activity – shows a chronological history of comments and activity on the card, including who originally created the card.
Card relationships (dependencies)
Cards can have two way relationships with other cards. To create a card relationship, open the 3 dot menu in the header of a card and select one of ‘Mark as…’ options to mark a card as:
- Blocking – blocking the progress of another card.
- Blocked by – is being blocked by another card.
- Related to – is loosely related to another card.
- Duplicate of – is a duplicate of an existing card.
Cards that are blocked or blocking will show a small flag icon in a board.
Cards can can also be filtered based on their relationships.
Effort estimation
By default, effort estimation is disabled. But you can switch it on for each space in Settings > Spaces. Each space can choose of the following estimation systems:
- Disabled – no estimate field is shown (default).
- Fibonacci points – 1, 2, 3, 5, 8
- Exponential points – 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
- T-shirt sizes – XS, S, M, L, XL
If you move a card to a space that is using a different estimation system, the card’s estimate will be mapped to the equivalent value (‘XS T-shirt’ becomes ‘1 Fibonacci point’). If estimates are disabled in the destination space, no estimate will be shown.
Child Cards
You can break down larger tasks into smaller tasks by adding Child Cards to them.
Once a Card has one or more Child Cards attached, it becomes a parent card.
Because Superthread is designed to be used by multiple, cross-functional teams, child cards don’t need to belong to the same Board or Space as their Parent card, they can belong to any board throughout the Workspace.
Let’s give an example:
As part of the Marketing Team, one of my jobs is to create video tutorials of new features; for example, for our Zapier integration.
- Before I can begin, I’m reliant on the engineering team delivering that feature, but I don’t live in the engineering team’s Board and follow everything that happens there, I just want to know if the feature is delivered so I can start my work.
- Being able to view the status of the relevant Child Card(s) makes it easy for me to get the visibility I need.
Archiving cards
When a card is no longer relevant you can archive it to keep your board tidy. Archiving hides the card from the board but still preserves it as a historical record. Archived cards are also filtered out of search results and hidden in associated projects and parent cards.
To archive a card, click the ‘Archive’ option in the 3 dot menu of a card.
View archived cards
You can find and view archived cards by opening the search pop-up and turning on the ‘Show archived’ filter. Also, any links to archived cards can also still be opened as normal. Whilst viewing an archived card you can click the restore option in the yellow banner to ‘un-archive’ it.
Currently there is no ‘archive browser’ for you to view all your archived cards, but we may add this in the future.
Deleting cards
You can permanently delete a card using the delete option in the card’s 3 dot menu. Deleting cannot be undone.
Card templates
Use card templates to write cards faster and guide people to share information more effectively. You can include instructions or specific formatting in the card description as well as apply certain fields such as tags and assignees. It’s also possible to set which templates are available in specific spaces.
If you have a large task that you do repeatedly, you can also include the creation of child cards as part of a template.
You can manage templates from Settings > Workspace > Templates > Cards
When applying a template to a child card, you can only select templates that themselves have no children.
