The Flexibility Trap: Why Too Much Customization Kills Productivity
Superthread founder David Hasovic explains why he was wrong about total customization and why teams actually crave structure over 'Notion-style' flexibility.

The 'Blank Canvas' Fallacy
When I first started Superthread, I had this vision of a tool that was infinitely moldable. I believed that you should be able to shape your software to fit your needs, not the other way around.
It sounds great in a pitch deck, but in practice, it’s a recipe for chaos.
The Notion Problem
The signs were there from the start. We talked to dozens of teams using Notion, and a consistent pattern emerged: it falls apart for teams of more than two people. It’s too flexible. When everything is a blank page, it becomes paralyzing. Without guardrails, every user organizes things differently, and soon, no one can find anything.
The Turning Point: What Teams Actually Want
A friend of mine made a comment that completely shifted my perspective:
'Teams don't want to spend time figuring out how to organize themselves; they want a system that shows them how to be organized.'
That was the 'Aha!' moment. Most teams aren't looking for a Lego set; they’re looking for a house that’s already built with the plumbing and electricity in the right places. They want a proven system.
Structure over Chaos
We’ve started focusing on a more structured approach. We still believe in being 'un-opinionated' enough to fit different workflows, but we’ve realized that providing a solid, logical framework is a feature, not a limitation.
Structure provides:
Speed: You don't have to think about 'where' to put a task; the system already knows.
Scalability: New team members can join and immediately understand how the work flows.
Reduced Cognitive Load: You can focus on the work itself, not the tool.
The Lesson Learned the Hard Way
I sometimes wonder where we’d be if we had taken this path from day one. We spent months building 'flexibility' that people ultimately found overwhelming.
But that’s the reality of the startup 'Dark Mansion', sometimes you have to trip over the furniture to realize it’s in the wrong place. We are moving forward with a product that is faster, more structured, and, crucially, designed to guide your team toward success, rather than leaving you to figure it out in the dark.
Experience a system that works for you, not against you.
Superthread provides the structure your team needs to move fast, without the paralysis of a blank canvas. Try the new, structured Superthread
